The complete guide to electric and motorised blinds

Electric blinds use a small motor - either mains-powered or battery-operated - to raise, lower, or tilt the blind at the touch of a button. No cords, no chains, no manual effort.

The most common motor types are hardwired and rechargeable. Hardwired motors draw power from a nearby socket or are wired directly into the mains by an electrician. They never need recharging but do require installation work. Rechargeable motors run on lithium-ion batteries that last roughly 6 to 12 months per charge and plug into any USB port to top up. They are simpler to retrofit because no wiring is involved.

Smart home integration is where electric blinds really earn their premium. Most modern motors connect to Alexa, Google Home, or Apple HomeKit via Wi-Fi or a small hub. You can set schedules - blinds open at 7 am, close at sunset - or control them with voice commands from the sofa.

Security is an overlooked benefit. Programmed blinds that open and close while you are on holiday create the impression of an occupied home. Combined with timed lighting, they form a credible deterrent.

Electric operation is especially practical for hard-to-reach windows. Skylights, roof lanterns, and tall stairwell windows are awkward or unsafe to operate manually. A remote control or app removes the problem entirely.

Not every blind type suits motorisation equally. Roller blinds and venetians are the most straightforward to motorise. Pleated blinds and day-and-night blinds also work well. Roman blinds can be motorised but the mechanism is more complex and the choice of suppliers narrower.

Cost varies. A battery motor adds roughly £80 to £150 per blind on top of the fabric and fitting cost. Hardwired systems cost more because of the electrical work. For a full house, the investment is significant - but the daily convenience and safety benefits compound over years of use.
