Bi-fold door blinds: solutions for wide openings

Bi-fold doors are one of the most popular features in modern UK homes, connecting kitchens and living rooms to gardens and patios. But dressing them with blinds is not straightforward. The doors fold, stack, and slide, so any window covering must work with that movement rather than against it.

The fundamental challenge is that bi-fold doors are not static windows. Each panel folds back on its neighbour, meaning any blind mounted to the wall or ceiling will obstruct the folding action. The blind must either travel with each panel or clear the entire opening when the doors are open.

Perfect Fit blinds are the most elegant solution for uPVC or aluminium bi-fold frames. Each blind clips into the glazing bead of its individual door panel, so when the doors fold open, the blinds fold with them. No interference with the mechanism, no dangling fabric, and no separate operation needed before opening the doors.

Integral blinds offer another approach. These are venetian or pleated blinds sealed inside the double-glazed unit itself. The slats sit between the two panes of glass, operated by a magnetic slider or small switch on the frame edge. Because the blind is enclosed, it never gets dusty, never tangles, and never obstructs door movement. The downside is that integral blinds must be specified when the doors are manufactured, so they are best suited to new installations or replacements.

For timber bi-fold frames where Perfect Fit is not compatible, side-guided roller blinds are a practical choice. These use slim vertical channels fixed to each door panel, with the roller cassette at the top of each pane. The side guides keep the fabric taut and prevent it flapping when the doors are opened for ventilation. Each panel carries its own independent blind.

Electric operation is particularly useful on wide bi-fold configurations with five or six panels. Manually lowering and raising six individual blinds twice a day becomes tedious quickly. Battery motors with a single remote let you control all panels together, or individual panels if you want partial coverage. Some homeowners programme them to close automatically at dusk.

Fabric choice depends on which direction the doors face. South-facing bi-folds need solar-reflective or heat-rejecting fabrics to prevent the room overheating. North-facing openings can use lighter translucent fabrics that maintain the view while softening any glare. For bedrooms with bi-fold doors, a blackout fabric is available in the Perfect Fit and side-guided systems.

Privacy is another consideration, particularly for ground-floor rooms facing neighbours or a street. Bi-fold doors are essentially one enormous window when closed, and without blinds the room is fully exposed after dark. Even a light translucent blind solves this while preserving the sense of openness during the day.
